The 7 Best Financial Companies to Work for in Boston

Boston runs on finance. Asset managers, banks, insurers, and fintech firms employ tens of thousands of people across the city, and the competition for talent is fierce. So which ones actually treat their people well?

We looked at recent rankings from the Boston Globe's Top Places to Work, Built In Boston, Glassdoor, and Forbes, plus what these companies have been up to in 2025 and 2026. Here are seven that stand out, in no particular order.

1. MassMutual

The Springfield-based insurance giant runs a major office at 10 Fan Pier Blvd in the Seaport, and it topped Built In Boston's 2026 list for career growth and development among financial services firms. The draw: a rare four-day work week for many roles, more than 80 verified benefits, and a heavy emphasis on internal mobility and mentorship. It also landed on the Globe's Top Places to Work list. If you want insurance with a fintech-first mindset, this is the spot.

2. Fidelity Investments

The biggest name on this list, headquartered at 245 Summer Street in the Financial District with roughly 6,200 Boston-area employees. Fidelity made Glassdoor's Best Places to Work 2025 and Built In Boston's 2026 best workplace list, and the Boston Globe reported in May 2026 that the firm had more than 5,300 jobs in its hiring pipeline, with a focus on tech and early-career engineers.

One caveat: that same Globe report covered a cut of about 1,000 jobs, roughly 1% of the workforce, as the company reorganized, and Fidelity has enforced a five-day in-office requirement. The brand, pay, and training remain among the strongest in the industry, but remote flexibility is not part of the deal.

3. Rockland Trust

The Hanover-based bank has made the Globe's Top Places to Work list for 17 consecutive years, a streak few Massachusetts employers of any size can match. Forbes named it the number one bank in the state in 2024 and has included it on its World's Best Banks list seven years running. The bank credits a "colleague-first" culture and has earned the Human Rights Campaign's Equality 100 score for nine straight years.

4. MFS Investment Management

The inventor of the mutual fund keeps its global headquarters at 111 Huntington Ave in Back Bay, with about 2,500 employees. Built In Boston recognized MFS in 2026 for workplace perception, and employees consistently praise its community-oriented culture, approachable leadership, and a company-funded retirement plan that stands out even in a benefits-rich industry.

5. Eastern Bank

Based at 265 Franklin Street, Eastern is a member of the Globe's Top Places to Work "10-Year Streak" hall of fame and was named a 2026 large-employer honoree by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Persons with Disabilities. It's known for its "Join Us For Good" philanthropy push, annual HRC recognition for LGBTQ+ equality, and a pension plan that is increasingly rare in banking. The bank has been integrating Cambridge Trust while keeping employee satisfaction scores high.

6. Sun Life U.S.

Sun Life's largest U.S. hub is in Wellesley, with about 1,300 employees, and it has made the Globe's Top Places to Work list seven consecutive years. The highlights: a hybrid model where employees pick their office days, generous sabbaticals, and paid family and medical leave programs that go beyond the state requirement.

7. Flywire

The downtown fintech, headquartered at 141 Tremont Street, handles global payments for education, healthcare, and travel. It made Built In's Best Large Places to Work in Boston for 2026 and has been a Globe Top Places to Work winner multiple times. Employees cite the fast-paced "FlyMate" culture, equity programs, and work-from-anywhere weeks. It's actively hiring for tech and sales roles in 2026.

Worth knowing before you apply

A few big names didn't make our list because of recent turbulence. State Street eliminated about 900 jobs in mid-2025 and announced further transformation cuts in 2026. LPL Financial cut roughly 300 jobs in February 2026. John Hancock has faced lawsuits in 2025 and 2026, including one tied to a hidden camera found in a women's locker room. Liberty Mutual reported fresh layoffs in its internal audit and actuarial departments in October 2026. None of that makes them bad places to work for everyone, but it's context worth having.

Rankings and awards reflect the most recent lists available as of October 2026. Benefits and hiring plans change, so confirm details with each employer before making a decision.
