Editorial standards & ethics.
Short doesn't mean careless. These are the rules every New England Press story follows.
Accuracy
- Every factual claim is verified against a primary source: a document, an official record, or a named person with direct knowledge.
- We link to sources whenever we can.
- Numbers, names, and quotes are checked by a second person before publishing.
Sourcing
We prefer named sources. We grant anonymity only when a source faces real risk and the information can't be gotten otherwise; an editor must know the source's identity.
Independence
Advertisers, sponsors, and owners don't influence coverage. Staff don't accept gifts or payment from people they cover. Sponsored content is always labeled "Sponsored."
Fairness
People who are criticized in a story get a reasonable chance to respond before publication.
Opinion vs. news
Opinion and analysis are clearly labeled. News stories don't take sides.
Our AI policy
We may use AI tools for tasks like transcription, summarizing public documents, or suggesting headlines. A human editor reports, writes or rewrites, fact-checks, and approves every story. We never publish AI-generated images as real photographs, and we never invent quotes or sources.
Mistakes
When we get something wrong, we fix it openly. See our corrections policy.
