The 9 Best Christmas Towns in New England for 2026

New England does Christmas like nowhere else, and 2026 is no exception. We checked the organizers' own pages for every town on this list, and all nine have announced dates for this year. Here is where to go, when, and what to know before you drive.

A quick note: "best" is our editorial pick, not a scientific ranking. Dates below come from the organizers, but details like shuttles and full schedules are still rolling out, so check the linked pages before you go.

1. Kennebunkport, Maine: Christmas Prelude

The one that started it all. Christmas Prelude runs December 3 to 13, 2026, with Dock Square tree lightings, Santa arriving by lobster boat, monastery caroling, fireworks and a street festival.

Know before you go: The town is free to visit, but some activities charge a fee. The organizer warns that lines can be long and foot traffic slow, and asks visitors to respect parking restrictions. The detailed shuttle and parking schedule on the Prelude site is still labeled 2025, so do not rely on it yet.

2. Freeport, Maine: Sparkle Celebration

Freeport's Sparkle Celebration runs December 4 to 13, 2026, opening with a Parade of Lights and Santa's arrival to bring the Talking Christmas Tree to life. Other traditions include the Sparkle Stroll and Frosty Frolic, and L.L.Bean's Northern Lights display runs alongside.

Know before you go: Almost all town parking lots are free all day, including the covered garage under Freeport Village Station. The 2026 brochure is still being prepared, with a mid-November release expected, so the full activity list and any fees are not final yet.

3. Woodstock, Vermont: Wassail Weekend

The most storybook weekend on the list. Wassail Weekend runs December 11 to 13, 2026, with a horse parade on December 12, a candlelit walk, an artisan market, a bonfire, a Memory Tree lighting and luminaries. Billings Farm & Museum runs its own Wassail celebration the same days, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Know before you go: The welcome party is ticketed with limited availability, so book ahead. Village parking is metered Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday parking is free, and East End Park parking is free. Farm sleigh and wagon rides depend on the weather.

4. Stowe, Vermont: A Traditional Christmas in Stowe

Stowe's village celebration runs December 4 to 6, 2026, with tree lightings, a children's lantern parade, festive wagon rides, a winter farmers market, a holiday bazaar, Santa visits and Candy Cane Lane.

Know before you go: Past years mixed free community activities with paid skating and ticketed performances, and the detailed 2026 schedule is not out yet. Treat any specific times you see floating around as last year's until the organizer posts the new one.

5. Stockbridge, Massachusetts: Main Street at Christmas

The town Norman Rockwell painted. Stockbridge's Main Street at Christmas runs December 5 to 6, 2026, recreating the scene from his Home for Christmas painting, which the chamber says was begun in 1956 and completed in 1967.

Know before you go: Sunday's Main Street recreation is December 6, noon to 2 p.m., $5 per person and free for children under 12. Saturday's historic property tour is $35 and the holiday concert is $40. No Sunday tickets are sold on site, so buy ahead and bring printed tickets. Tickets are nonrefundable, the event runs rain, snow or shine, and the chamber expects big crowds.

6. Nantucket, Massachusetts: Christmas Stroll

An island Christmas. The Nantucket Christmas Stroll runs December 4 to 6, 2026, with Santa's nautical arrival Saturday at noon, Victorian-costumed carolers, the Talking Tree and a Christmas Marketplace.

Know before you go: The Marketplace is free, Saturday, December 5, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 9 Salem Street. Two rows of the downtown Stop & Shop lot close from the afternoon of December 4 through the evening of December 5. The chamber's page still links a 2025 program, and ferry schedules and island lodging fill up, so book the boat and the room early.

7. Newport, Rhode Island: Holidays at the Newport Mansions

The Gilded Age version of Christmas. The Breakers, Marble House and Chateau-sur-Mer are decorated from November 21, 2026 through January 3, 2027, with nearly 30 Christmas trees and The Breakers' famous poinsettia tree.

Know before you go: Daytime visits use regular mansion admission, and The Breakers requires a specific date and entry time, so buy ahead. The evening event, Sparkling Lights at The Breakers, runs select dates November 21 through December 27, 4 to 8 p.m., at $45 for adults and $18 for ages 6 to 12. The houses close Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, and at 2 p.m. on December 24. Chateau-sur-Mer is weekends only.

Know before you go: Tickets are $42 for adults and $30 for youth on Thursdays and Sundays, and $48 for adults on Fridays and Saturdays, with member discounts. Entry is staggered every 30 minutes from 2 p.m. with last entry at 7 p.m., so pick an arrival slot when you book. 9. Portsmouth, New Hampshire: Candlelight Stroll

Strawbery Banke Museum's Candlelight Stroll runs December 4 to 6, 11 to 13 and 18 to 20, 2026, with furnished historic houses, costumed roleplayers, candle boxes, seasonal music and period holiday traditions.

Know before you go: The Stroll is separately ticketed with selected arrival windows; ordinary museum admission does not cover it. There is no general on-site event parking, so park off-site and walk or take the free Vintage Christmas trolley on Saturdays and Sundays. Friday arrival windows begin at 5:30 p.m. per the museum, even though some calendar listings say 6.

Plan the trip

  • Book the ticketed ones now. Stockbridge, Newport, Mystic and Portsmouth all use timed or limited entry, and the Woodstock welcome party has limited capacity.
  • Do not trust last year's schedule. Several organizers still have 2025 details on their sites. We linked the official pages above so you can check the latest.
  • Go midweek when you can. Every organizer warns about weekend crowds, and parking is the first thing to fill up.
