Why Kennebunkport Is One of America's Top Christmas Destinations

The coastal Maine town earned another national travel spotlight this month. Its 45th Christmas Prelude runs December 3 to 13, 2026, with tree lightings, a family street festival, and Santa arriving by lobster boat.

Why Kennebunkport Is One of America's Top Christmas Destinations

Updated October 24, 2026, with national travel coverage and the official Christmas Prelude signature schedule.

Kennebunkport, Maine, has built a Christmas reputation that reaches well beyond New England. This month, Condé Nast Traveler included the coastal town among seven U.S. holiday destinations, pointing to an experience few places can copy: Santa arriving by lobster boat.

The main attraction returns December 3 to 13, 2026. Organizers are billing the 11-day Christmas Prelude as “45 Years of Magic.” For visitors, that means two weekends of lights, caroling, parades, and waterfront festivities across Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, and Cape Porpoise.

What the national recognition actually means

The October 19, 2026, Condé Nast Traveler feature describes Kennebunkport as offering a “one-of-a-kind experience.” It is a destination roundup, not a numbered ranking or a declaration that the town is America's best.

There is older recognition, too. Boston.com reported in December 2019 that Condé Nast Traveler included Kennebunkport among 25 U.S. cities that go all out for Christmas.

The official Christmas Prelude website also says HGTV called Kennebunkport the No. 2 Christmas town in America. That claim appeared in local reporting in 2019, so it should be read as past recognition, not a new 2026 result. We could not establish the original ranking year from the HGTV material reviewed.

The takeaway: Kennebunkport has a documented national holiday profile. Calling it one of the country's standout Christmas destinations is reasonable, but treating an old accolade as a fresh award would be misleading.

Why this coastal town stands out

Prelude leans into Maine rather than trying to imitate a generic winter village. Cape Porpoise has a lobster-trap Christmas tree. Santa comes upriver by boat. Dock Square's tree lighting brings caroling into the center of town, while the second weekend adds a street festival and fireworks over the cove.

The long run is another advantage. You can choose between two weekends instead of trying to fit everything into one crowded afternoon. Snow is not guaranteed, and neither is calm waterfront weather, but the celebration does not depend on a postcard-perfect forecast.

The 2026 dates worth saving

These events appear on the organizers' official 2026 signature schedule:

  • Friday, December 4: Dock Square caroling begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the tree lighting at 6 p.m. The Cape Porpoise Lobster Trap Tree Lighting follows at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 5: Mrs. Claus and reindeer at Kennebunk Outfitters at 2:30 p.m., the Hat Parade at 3 p.m., and candlelight caroling at the Franciscan Monastery at 6:30 p.m. Organizers say there is no parking on monastery property.
  • Sunday, December 6: Watch Santa travel upriver around 12:30 p.m., before his lobster-boat arrival at the Nonantum Resort at 1 p.m.
  • Thursday, December 10: Storybook Christmas at the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust runs 4 to 6 p.m., with Santa, cocoa, and cookie decorating.
  • Friday, December 11: The Family Street Festival begins at 4 p.m., with traffic closures from Dock Square through Lower Village. Caroling starts at 5:30 p.m., the tree lights at 6 p.m., and fireworks follow at 6:15 p.m.
  • Sunday, December 13: The Pooch Parade starts at 11 a.m. Santa arrives by fire engine in Cape Porpoise at 2 p.m.

Organizers say the full schedule will be available through the Prelude app. Recheck event details before traveling.

A good choice for families

The Nonantum's Santa arrival is free and open to the public, with complimentary photos, crafts, and warm beverages. Storybook Christmas also lists free admission. The Hat Parade welcomes children and adults, and the Mrs. Claus events are listed as free.

Choose one or two highlights rather than asking small children to stay outside through an entire evening. Pack warm layers, allow time for bathroom and food stops, and keep children close around the river and busy viewing areas.

Plan the parking before the festivities

As of October 24, the official parking and shuttles page still displays a 2025 shuttle schedule. Do not assume last year's prices, routes, or hours apply in 2026.

Organizers warn that parking is finite and that visitors cannot occupy private business lots for the whole day. Check the updated arrangements before leaving, follow posted restrictions, and allow extra time on festival nights.
